Supporting Student Success: Harley’s Educational Journey with GMi

GMi continues to demonstrate its commitment to student development by offering meaningful opportunities throughout the educational journey. One inspiring example is Harley, a student from the University of Cincinnati, whose progressive involvement with GMi showcases how early exposure and hands-on experience can shape a future career.

A Multi-Year Journey of Growth

Harley began working at GMi in 2021 in the shipping department, gaining foundational knowledge of the company’s operations. The following summer, he transitioned to the production floor, where he deepened his understanding of manufacturing processes. In 2023, Harley joined the Engineering team for an internship, working directly on the production floor and applying classroom concepts to real-world challenges.

His journey continued with Co-Op rotations in 2024 and 2025 through the University of Cincinnati, allowing him to explore engineering projects more deeply and contribute to the company in a more technical capacity.

Building a Strong Foundation

Having worked at GMi before his internship, Harley entered the engineering role with a solid grasp of how the business operates. This background helped him connect the dots between different departments and better understand the impact of engineering decisions on production and logistics.

Academic and Professional Impact

Harley’s experience at GMi significantly enhanced his academic performance. He was able to apply practical knowledge from his co-op rotations to classroom discussions, particularly in engineering courses that required familiarity with specific programs and tools. This real-world experience gave him a competitive edge and boosted his confidence in academic settings.

Encouraging Future Students

For students considering a co-op program, Harley’s journey highlights the importance of embracing new opportunities. He found GMi to be a supportive environment where asking questions and learning on the job were encouraged. This culture of mentorship and openness made it easier to transition into more technical roles and grow professionally.
